Ahumoana Toitūtanga | Sustainable Aquaculture

From water to plate, customers can be assured their Hī mussels are part of a wider kaupapa to protect, preserve and futureproof our environment.

Research shows global fish consumption is rising faster than other proteins, largely driven by the growing recognition that kaimoana is not only a tasty delicacy, but also has a multitude of health benefits.

However, wild fishery production around the world is nearing capacity, with limited potential for increasing production in global marine capture fisheries.
As a result of this imbalance between supply and demand, the aquaculture industry – the controlled cultivation of aquatic organisms – has been thrust into the spotlight.
Mussel farming is one of the greenest products in the world. At Hī, we take our stewardship role seriously, understanding that our duty is to not only provide a quality, sustainable product, but to create and improve industry best practices that can then be adopted by others.
Hī is invested in exploring new aquaculture opportunities and we have positioned ourselves to be at the forefront of developments in this industry.
Our collaboration, through Ngā Iwi i Te Rohe o Te Waiariki, with Aotearoa’s top science and technology experts will ensure we can find new ways to grow, harvest and utilise our kaimoana – creating a world-class and sustainable marine and aquaculture industry across the Waiariki region.

Whakatupu rākau kia wawāo i ngā puha waro | Planting trees to offset carbon emissions

Like every business, trust and organisation, Hī has carbon emissions. However, unlike other operations, through our parent company Te Arawa Fisheries, we have the opportunity to offset our discharge in a way that can also support our iwi and whānau.

Doing our bit to address climate change is important to us. As part of Te Arawa Fisheries’ Climate Change Strategy, Hī is involved in Aka Rākau – a significant kaupapa to offset our emissions by growing trees on Māori land for carbon credits.
Carbon credits have a tangible value through Aotearoa’s Emissions Trading Scheme. One carbon credit represents one tonne of carbon dioxide (or equivalent for other greenhouse gases). Carbon credits can then be sold to companies who need them to meet their carbon offset obligations.
Preserving our planet for future generations is the number one goal of this kaupapa and permanent regenerating forests is our way forward. Forests provide a safe haven for our endangered wildlife and native flora to rejuvenate, while they also enhance our environment by stabilising the land and preventing runoff into waterways.

We are partnering with Māori land owners to turn under-utilised land into permanent rejuvenating, native forests that will offset our carbon emissions, provide a return to the landowner, create local jobs and protect our environment for the future.
